Webinar

Speakers: Randel Richner (Neocure), Mary Ann Clark (Neocure)

Host: American Academy of Medical Administrators (AAMA)

Session Title: Emerging Technologies: Impact of Health Reform Initiatives on Patient Care and Reimbursement

Summary of Presentation:

Buzz words like “value-based purchasing,” “Accountable Care Organizations,” and “episodic payments” continue to dominate the health reform conversation. We are entering an era where quality-of-care and cost-of-care are paramount to healthcare policy decision-making as multiple procedures become bundled under a single payment as well as increased assumed risk for patient outcomes at the hospital level. Concurrently, with this shift in policy will also be a change in the way that hospitals view and adopt new medical technologies which traditionally incur high cost. Questions regarding the value of certain products will arise and hospitals will need to carefully assess the impact of expensive, new technologies on hospital budgets from the perspective of quality linked to payment and under the construct of episodic payments. This session will explain the potential changes in new technology adoption under health reform as well as describe potential collaborations with medical technology innovators that can provide a win-win for both hospitals and medical technology innovators alike.

AdvaMed 2010 is the premier MedTech Conference for CEOs, business executives, policy-makers, financiers, media, and industry stakeholders from around the world.

AdvaMed 2010 provides unparalleled learning and best practice forums. Neocure’s President, Randel Richner and Senior Vice President, Dan Tuden, PhD will be participating in this year’s educational panel along with thought-leaders from their industry. Panel details are as follows:

MARKET ACCESS CHALLENGES FOR DEVICE AND DIAGNOSTIC COMPANIES: ADAPTIVE APPROACHES FOR VALUE CHARACTERIZATION

Wednesday, October 20, 2010 ~ 10:45 AM – 12:00 PM

Panel Location: 207A

Sound value characterization and communication strategies are essential to achieving market access in an increasingly challenging reimbursement environment for medical devices and diagnostics. As the “rules of the road” continue to evolve and global health reform efforts unfold, how do manufacturers engage payers early in decision making, maximize commercialization potential, minimize avoidable risks, and distinguish “got to have” versus “nice to know” evidence requirements? What are the most appropriate approaches for value communication in the absence of standard accepted approaches for medical technologies? How can manufacturers centralize health outcomes and economics development, prioritize efforts for specific portfolio and pipeline products, and align internal efforts productively to reasonably meet the needs of external decision makers?

Moderator:

Eric Faulkner, MPH, Senior Director, Pricing and Reimbursement, Market Access and Outcomes Strategy, RTI Health Solutions

Panelists:

Randel Richner, BSN, MPH, Founder and President, The Neocure Group

Lynne Kelley, MD, FACS, Vice President, Senior Global Medical Director,Kimberly-Clark

Mickey Brown, MPH, Director, Payer Strategies, Medtronic Spinal & Biologics

STRATEGIES FOR SMALL COMPANIES TO LEVERAGE COMPARATIVE EFFECTIVENESS POLICIES

Wednesday, October 20, 2010 ~ 04:00 PM – 05:15 PM

Panel Location: 207A

The demands for evidence of a technology’s ability to show its value are coming from all angles. It is expected that government funded comparative effectiveness studies will provide policy makers with information about how interventions compare with one other. While pharmaceutical firms and large medical device companies may have extensive resources for this challenge, medical device companies with only one or two technologies confront a different calculation in developing evidence. Developing proof of comparative-effectiveness can be expensive and challenging. With only one technology, firms face the risk that a poorly designed or conducted study could result in findings that do not accurately reflect the value of the technology. The impact on a small medical device company can be devastating. However, there are strategies that can address these challenges associated with evidence development. This panel will look at examples of developing evidence to show how technology can improve outcomes and how to leverage that evidence with a variety of stakeholders. The discussion will cover efficient ways to develop evidence, how to manage risks associated with comparative effectiveness research, and the decision-making process senior company leadership uses to set efforts in motion. The demands for evidence of a technology’s ability to show its value are coming from all angles. It is expected that government funded comparative effectiveness studies will provide policy makers with information about how interventions compare with one other.
